Growing Sprouts and Microgreens Essentials

From the Files of the Dirt Diva Diaries

The Sprout Grower’s Shop

Everything you need to grow clean, healthy sprouts and microgreens at home

Every product on this page has been evaluated through two lenses. Kevin Mansoor, CNP reviews each pick against technical criteria — food safety standards, material quality, germination science, and what actually matters at the growing level. Then Ivy Green puts it through the Dirt Diva filter — is it practical, is it worth the counter space, and will a real home grower reach for it every single day? We haven’t personally grown sprouts with every single item on this list, but we’ve done the research and the vetting so you don’t have to start from scratch. Three picks per category. No filler. That’s the Dirt Diva promise.

This page contains affiliate links, which means we may earn a small commission if you make a purchase — at no extra cost to you. We only recommend products that meet our evaluation criteria.

Mumm’s Sprouting Seeds

The only seeds we use — and the only ones we recommend

Kevin Mansoor, CNP

From a food safety standpoint, sprout seeds are not the same as garden seeds — pathogen testing is non-negotiable. Mumm’s tests every lot, holds FSSC 22000 food safety certification, and their organic certification means you know exactly what you’re putting into your body. These are the only seeds I recommend to my clients and the only ones I use in my own kitchen.

Ivy Green — Dirt Diva

Honestly? I just trust Kev on all the food safety science stuff — do what he says. What I can tell you is that Mumm’s seeds actually sprout. Like, reliably, every time, without drama. Their variety selection is genuinely fun and they make it easy to explore beyond basic alfalfa. Once you try quality seeds you won’t go back to guessing. — and yes, we have a discount code for you below. 🌱

Category 🫙 Sprout Essentials
Ivy Green — Dirt Diva The beautiful thing about sprouting is how little equipment you actually need to get started — a jar, a lid that drains, and good seeds. That’s basically it. But the right jar setup makes the daily rinse-and-drain so effortless that you’ll actually stick with it. These three picks cover the classic wide-mouth mason jar approach in a way that’s beginner-proof and won’t clutter up your whole counter.

Category 🥗 Storage
Ivy Green — Dirt Diva You grew a gorgeous jar of sprouts — now don’t let them turn into a sad soggy mess in your fridge because you tossed them in the wrong container. The key is moisture control: sprouts need to breathe a little and stay just damp enough without sitting in water. A good storage bag, a proper container, and a salad spinner to get them dry before fridge storage are the three things that will double your shelf life. These picks do exactly that.

Category 🌱 Microgreens Equipment
Kevin Mansoor, CNP Microgreens are a step up from jar sprouting — you’re working with a growing medium, trays, and a harvest cycle that takes anywhere from 7 to 14 days depending on variety. The equipment needs to support good airflow, consistent moisture distribution, and easy harvest. Ivy’s note: Kev is very particular about trays and I have learned to just agree with him on this one — the right tray setup genuinely does make a difference.

Category 💡 Microgreens Lighting
Kevin Mansoor, CNP Light quality matters more than most beginners expect. Microgreens need full-spectrum light in the 5000–6500K range for compact, upright growth — a warm-toned household bulb will give you leggy, pale results. I evaluate grow lights for spectrum accuracy, coverage area relative to a standard 1020 tray, and heat output. Ivy adds: I also evaluate whether they look ridiculous hanging in my kitchen. There is a balance.

Category ✂️ Sanitation & Harvest
Kevin Mansoor, CNP This is the category I take most seriously. Sprouts and microgreens are raw foods grown in warm, moist conditions — the same environment that pathogenic bacteria love. Clean equipment between every grow cycle is not optional. Sharp harvest shears prevent crushing and bruising that accelerates spoilage. A dedicated cleaning brush gets into every seam of your trays and jars. Ivy’s take: Kevin is not being dramatic here. Just clean your stuff. It takes two minutes and it matters.
