Perlite: A lightweight, volcanic glass material used to improve drainage and aeration in potting mixes and soil.
Perlite is like adding tiny air pockets to your soil. It’s a volcanic glass material that’s been heated to high temperatures, causing it to pop like popcorn and become incredibly lightweight and porous. When mixed into potting soil or garden beds, perlite helps improve drainage, preventing the soil from becoming compacted and waterlogged. This allows for better air circulation around plant roots, promoting healthy growth.
Think of perlite as the “breathing room” for your plants’ roots. It helps prevent them from suffocating in heavy, compacted soil. Perlite is also often used in seed-starting mixes to create a loose, airy environment ideal for germination. If you have heavy clay soil or tend to overwater your plants, adding perlite can be a helpful way to improve drainage and prevent root rot.
