Parasite: An organism that lives on or in another organism (the host) and benefits by deriving nutrients at the host’s expense.
In the garden, parasites are unwelcome guests that can cause significant harm to your plants. These organisms, often insects, mites, or even fungi, live on or inside the plant and steal its nutrients, weakening it and sometimes even leading to its death.
Think of a parasite like a vampire, sucking the life out of its host. Some common garden parasites include aphids, which suck sap from leaves and stems; spider mites, which feed on plant cells; and various fungal pathogens, which invade plant tissues and cause diseases. Identifying and controlling parasites is crucial for maintaining a healthy garden. This might involve using natural predators, organic pesticides, or cultural practices that make the environment less hospitable to these harmful organisms.
