Overwintering: The process of helping plants survive the winter months.
Overwintering is all about giving your plants a cozy winter retreat. It’s how gardeners help their less hardy plants survive the cold, harsh winter conditions. This might involve bringing plants indoors, providing them with extra protection outdoors, or storing them in a dormant state until spring.
For tender plants that can’t handle frost, overwintering might mean bringing them inside to a sunny window or a heated greenhouse. For hardier plants, it could involve mulching heavily around the base to insulate the roots or covering them with burlap or other protective materials. Some plants, like bulbs and tubers, can be dug up and stored in a cool, dry place until replanting in the spring. Overwintering techniques vary depending on the plant and the climate, but the goal is always the same: to help your beloved plants make it through the winter and thrive again in the spring.
