Mutation: A change in the genetic material of a plant that can lead to new or different characteristics.
Imagine your plant’s DNA as a set of instructions for how it grows. A mutation is like a typo in those instructions. It’s a change in the plant’s genetic code that can sometimes result in a noticeable difference, like a different flower color, a new leaf shape, or even a change in how the plant grows.
Mutations can happen naturally, or they can be caused by things like radiation or certain chemicals. While some mutations can be harmful to the plant, others can be beneficial, giving the plant a new advantage in its environment. Plant breeders often look for and cultivate plants with desirable mutations to create new varieties with improved traits.
