Mite: A tiny arachnid, often considered a pest in gardens, that can damage plants by feeding on leaves and other plant parts.
Mites are tiny creatures related to spiders and ticks that can be a big problem in the garden. They’re so small that they’re often hard to see with the naked eye, but their damage is usually quite noticeable. Many mite species are plant pests, feeding on leaves, stems, and even fruits. This feeding can cause stippling, discoloration, and even deformation of the plant parts.
Some mites, like spider mites, spin tiny webs on plants, which can be a telltale sign of their presence. Mites can weaken plants, making them more susceptible to other problems. Because they’re so small and reproduce quickly, mite infestations can be difficult to control. Regularly inspecting your plants, especially the undersides of leaves, is a good way to catch mite problems early.
