Maturity: The stage at which a plant reaches its full growth and is ready for harvest or reproduction.
When we talk about a plant reaching maturity in the garden, we’re essentially talking about it growing up! It’s the point where the plant is fully developed and ready to do what it’s meant to do, whether that’s producing delicious tomatoes, beautiful flowers, or seeds for the next generation. For vegetables, maturity often means they’re at their peak flavor and size, ready to be picked and enjoyed.
Knowing when a plant has reached maturity is key to successful gardening. Picking a tomato before it’s ripe will mean it won’t have its full flavor, and waiting too long can cause it to become overripe and mushy. Each type of plant has its own signs of maturity. Some might change color, others might reach a specific size, and some might feel a certain way when ready. A little research or experience will help you learn the signs for your specific plants.
