Heterohabditis: A genus of beneficial nematodes used as a biological control agent against insect pests.
These microscopic worms are like tiny assassins in the garden, attacking and killing various soil-dwelling insect pests. They enter the insect’s body and release bacteria that quickly kill the host. Heterohabditis nematodes are particularly effective against white grubs, which are the larvae of Japanese beetles and other scarab beetles that can damage lawns and garden plants.
For home gardeners, Heterohabditis nematodes can be a safe and effective alternative to chemical insecticides. They are applied to the soil as a liquid suspension and actively seek out and kill their target pests. Because they are specific to certain insect pests, they don’t harm beneficial insects like ladybugs or earthworms. Using beneficial nematodes is a great way to manage pest populations in an environmentally friendly way.
