Gall: An abnormal growth on a plant, often caused by insects, mites, or fungi.
In gardening, galls are unusual, often bumpy, or swollen growths you might see on leaves, stems, or roots. They’re the plant’s reaction to an irritant, usually a pest or disease. Think of them as a plant’s version of a wart or a cyst.
For home gardeners, galls can be a bit alarming, but they’re not always a serious threat to the plant’s overall health. Many galls are simply cosmetic issues. However, some galls can weaken the plant or interfere with its ability to photosynthesize or take up water and nutrients. Identifying the cause of the gall is key to determining whether any action needs to be taken. Pruning off affected branches or leaves can sometimes be enough to control the problem.
