Foliar: Relating to leaves.
In gardening, “foliar” often refers to the application of fertilizers or pesticides directly to a plant’s leaves rather than to the soil. This method, known as foliar feeding, allows plants to absorb nutrients quickly through their leaves, which can be especially helpful if the plant is struggling to take up nutrients from the soil. Foliar sprays can also be used to target specific pests or diseases affecting the leaves.
Foliar feeding can be a useful technique for home gardeners to give plants a quick boost of nutrients or address deficiencies. It’s important to use a fertilizer specifically designed for foliar application and follow the instructions carefully to avoid burning the leaves. Foliar sprays for pest or disease control should also be used cautiously and according to label directions, as some can harm beneficial insects or the environment.
