Erect: Upright or growing vertically.
In gardening, “erect” describes the growth habit of certain plants. An erect plant typically has a strong, central stem that grows straight upwards, with branches that tend to stay close to the main stem rather than spreading outwards. Think of plants like sunflowers, hollyhocks, or many types of ornamental grasses. Their upright growth makes them well-suited for specific garden designs, like creating vertical accents or fitting into narrow spaces.
Erect plants can be great for adding height and structure to your garden. They can also help create a sense of formality or act as a backdrop for lower-growing plants. However, some erect plants might need staking or other support to prevent them from toppling over, especially in windy areas. Consider the mature height and spread of an erect plant before including it in your garden design to ensure it fits well with its surroundings.
