Embryo: The rudimentary plant contained within a seed.
Think of the embryo as the tiny, sleeping baby plant inside every seed. It’s the core of what will eventually grow into a full-fledged plant, containing all the essential parts in miniature form: the beginnings of the roots, stem, and leaves. The embryo gives the seed its potential for life, waiting for the right conditions like warmth, moisture, and sometimes light to awaken and begin its growth journey.
Understanding the embryo is key to successful seed starting for home gardeners. It’s why we’re so careful about things like seed depth, soil temperature, and watering. We’re trying to create the ideal environment for that little embryo to develop and sprout. If the embryo isn’t viable or if the conditions aren’t right, the seed won’t germinate, and you won’t get a new plant.
