Dahlia: A flowering plant with showy, often brightly colored blooms, ranging in size and form.
Dahlias are like the showstoppers of the late summer and fall garden. They come in an incredible variety of colors, shapes, and sizes, from small pom-poms to dinner-plate-sized blooms. These tuberous perennials are known for their vibrant flowers, which add a burst of color to the garden when many other flowers are fading.
Dahlias can be a rewarding addition to your home garden. They make excellent cut flowers, and their long blooming season provides color for months. Dahlias need well-drained soil and plenty of sunlight. Because they are tender perennials, meaning they can’t survive frost, in colder climates, the tubers need to be dug up after the first frost and stored over winter to be replanted in the spring. With a little care, dahlias will reward you with a spectacular display of blooms.
