Cut flower: A flower that is grown specifically for cutting and use in bouquets or floral arrangements.
Think of cut flowers as blooms bred for beauty and long vase life. Unlike flowers grown in a garden bed for their ornamental value, cut flowers are typically grown in fields or greenhouses specifically to be harvested and used in floral arrangements. They often have longer stems and larger blooms and are bred for qualities that make them ideal for bouquets.
In a home garden, you might dedicate a section to growing cut flowers if you enjoy having fresh bouquets in your home. Many popular garden flowers, like zinnias, cosmos, and sunflowers, also make excellent cut flowers. When harvesting cut flowers, it’s best to do it in the cool morning or evening and immediately place the stems in water. Growing your own cut flowers allows you to have a constant supply of beautiful, fresh blooms to brighten your home.
