Cultivar: A plant variety produced in cultivation by selective breeding.
Think of cultivars as specially bred versions of plants. They’re created by plant breeders who handpick plants with desirable traits, like bigger flowers, better flavor, or disease resistance, and then crossbreed them. The offspring are further selected and bred until the desired traits are stable and consistently passed on. These distinct varieties, bred by humans, are called cultivars.
In your home garden, you’ll often choose specific cultivars of plants. For example, you might pick a particular tomato cultivar because it’s known for its sweetness or another because it’s resistant to a common disease. Cultivars allow gardeners to choose plants best suited for their specific needs and growing conditions, ensuring a more successful and enjoyable gardening experience.
