Bulb: An underground storage structure of a plant comprising fleshy leaves or scales.
Bulbs are fascinating plant structures that act as a sort of pantry for the plant. They store all the nutrients a plant needs to grow and flower, allowing it to survive dormant periods like winter or drought. Think of onions, tulips, daffodils, and lilies–all examples of plants that grow from bulbs.
When you plant a bulb, you’re essentially planting a pre-packaged plant, ready to grow when conditions are right. The bulb contains the beginnings of the leaves, stem, and flower, all tucked away inside those fleshy scales. This is why bulbs are so popular with gardeners–they’re easy to plant and reliably produce beautiful flowers. Just pop them in the ground, and nature does the rest!
