Beds: Raised or defined areas of soil prepared for planting.
Garden beds are designated areas of soil specifically prepared for growing plants. They can be raised, level with the ground, or even sunken, and are often enclosed by some type of edging material like wood, stone, or brick. Garden beds offer several advantages for home gardeners.
Creating defined beds allows you to customize your soil for specific plants. You can easily amend the soil with compost or other organic matter to improve drainage or fertility. Beds also make it easier to manage weeds, as you can focus your efforts on a smaller, more contained area. Raised beds, in particular, can improve drainage and warm up faster in the spring, extending the growing season. They can also make gardening more accessible for people with mobility issues.
