Axis: The central line of growth of a plant, typically the stem and root.
In gardening, the axis is like the backbone of the plant. It’s the main stem that grows upwards and the main root that grows downwards. Think of it as the central support system that connects the roots, stem, leaves, and flowers. A strong axis is essential for a healthy plant.
The axis is important because it’s how water and nutrients are transported throughout the plant. Water and minerals are absorbed by the roots and travel up the stem through the axis to the leaves. Then, the sugars produced during photosynthesis in the leaves travel down the stem through the axis to the rest of the plant, including the roots. So, keeping the axis healthy and undamaged is crucial for the overall well-being of your plants.
