Annual: A plant that completes its life cycle in one growing season.
Annual plants are those that sprout from seed, grow, flower, produce seeds, and then die all within a single year. This means you’ll need to plant new annuals each year if you want them in your garden. While this might seem like more work, it also gives you the opportunity to change up your garden design every year and try new varieties.
Many popular flowers and vegetables are annuals. Think of petunias, marigolds, zinnias, and many types of tomatoes, peppers, and beans. Because they only live for one season, annuals often put on a big show of flowers or produce a large harvest in a relatively short period. They’re a great way to add vibrant color and delicious food to your garden.
